At the Edge of Life - 15 short stories that will change lives

“At the Edge of Life” by Essa Bayoumi
Essa Bayoumi takes readers of “At the Edge of Life” on a journey through time and space while forgetting time and space.

Time for a writer – at least for the author of this new collection of short stories – has no direction, except the way he looks at life and those who miraculously feel it. Space, for Essa Bayoumi, is where nature shows its marvel and guides humans to engage with it. Therefore, the sequence of the fifteen stories contained in this collection does not follow the direction of time familiar to most people; past towards future. Nor does it follow location of places: south to north. But it has a hidden thread the readers can detect if they positioned themselves at the edge of life. At that edge, man forgets a certain time and specific place, and gets a glimpse of the eternal world inside himself. Or, that is at least what the author of this collection hoped for.

Readers of “At the Edge of Life” by Essa Bayoumi are invited to leave what they know (or think they know!) behind and discover the world and themselves anew. The author wrote these short stories in a long span of time (three decades) and a large distance of space (between his home country Egypt and his current home Germany). He wrote these stories two times; one time in the Arabic language, his mother tongue. They were published in Egypt in 2019, and some of the stories were already published in Al Jassra magazine in Doha, Qatar. The second time, he wrote them in English for his friends who were interested in his stories, but unable to read them in Arabic. It was the advice of his wife to try to share his stories with a wider range of English readers or those who are interested in a glimpse at the edge of life where we all can meet and become friends.
